Column: The arts flourish in Golden

Avenue Flashes

I don’t know if it’s the beautiful inspiring background we have, or something in the air and water, but in case you hadn’t noticed, Golden has become a place where all the arts really flourish. Whether it’s fine art, music, dance, theater or even poetry, there is always something artistic going on around town that can capture your imagination.

One of the gems in our local art scene is the Foothills Art Center. Over the last 60 years it has grown into a place with a national reputation for presenting some of the top artists works as well as providing a nurturing environment for all local artists to learn, participate and pursue their dreams. It’s become a truly special place.

Of course, all of that does come with a cost to maintain, and like most arts organizations across the country, it relies on funding from various sources and has different fundraising events throughout the year. Recently, it has gone a step further than just a one day gala. Now the organization is presenting an entire week of terrific events called ARTSWEEK Golden.

It will runJuly 7 through 15 with terrific things happening all over town. Now, the schedule, as well as the complete descriptions of all of these events gets a little complicated, as some of them overlap others with the dates and times, but I’ll just give you a brief overview of what you can look forward to. For more detailed information, you will want to visit Once there, click on the title of each event and it will take you to a more detailed description.

Once you are on the website you will see listings like a Plein Air Painting event going for several days where artists basically just set up an easel around town and paint what they see. They will then be exhibiting them at a reception later in the week.

There also will be an ARTSWEEK Festival from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on the weekend of July 9-10 downtown at 12th and Arapahoe streets. It will feature over 100 artists in this nationally juried arts festival. It will also be featuring kids activities and games along with plenty of food and drinks.

There will also be something called the Itty Bitty Art Committee Walking Tour, featuring 14 tiny works of art that are intended to be fun and serendipitous for locals and visitors alike. That’s happening from 3-4 p.m. July 14 at the Golden Visitors Center.

The Buffalo Rose, Woody’s Pizza, The Golden Mill and Bob’s Atomic Burgers all have special days scheduled where they will be donating a percentage of their sales to the Foothills Art Center. The Buffalo Rose will also be hosting an art trivia night on July 12 and there will be an aerialist performing live July 13 at the Golden Mill.

There’s going to be a Stories Worth Telling night bringing together Colorado film makers for a night of storytelling from 5:30-10 p.m. July 7 at the Buffalo Rose.

The whole thing is capped off with the Unframed Gala featuring cocktails, dinner, a silent art auction as well as music and dancing starting at 6 p.m. July 15 at the Buffalo Rose.

There are a few more things to check out, so make it a point to visit the above mentioned website. ARTSWEEK Golden promises to be a lot of fun and really supports one of our essential organizations.
