Commerce City police said one person is in custody after a car theft and the kidnapping of a child.

It happened around 11:20 a.m. July 9 in the 8900 block of East 104th Avenue. A press statement said the vehicle's owner went into a store but left the unlocked car running. A 10-year-old and a 1-year-old were inside the car.

The suspect, whose name wasn't immediately released, left the store and got into the car. Police said the older child got out of the car before the suspect drove off.

Police found the car near Seventh Avenue and Strong Street in Brighton. Commerce City officers, Adams County sheriff's deputies and Brighton police officers stopped the car in the 100 block of North Eighth Avenue. The 1-year-old child was not harmed.

"The Commerce City Police Department reminds the public to ensure their vehicles are secured and turned off when unattended, and that children are not left alone in a vehicle, even if for short periods of time," the statement said.
